Yatra –a youth-led organisation in Nepal—on Saturday felicitated garbage collectors from across the Valley for their contribution to environment conservation through wastage management.Over two dozens of garbage collectors working in different areas of the Kathmandu Valley were awarded with Conservation Hero titles for helping the environmental cause by managing wastages that include used-up bottles, metals, scrap paper, among others.
The awards were given amidst a function followed by a cycle rally participated by the awardees, journalists, social workers and professionals from various walks of life. The rally ended at Nagdaha, a wetland site situated at Dhapakhel VDC of Lalitpur district, where a free eye and dental health camp was launched.During the programme, the garbage collectors were also provided training and materials on first aid as most of them are prone to health risks at their workplaces.
On the occasion, the president of Yatra, Deepti Khakurel, said the programme aimed at promoting an emergent concerns of environment conservation by appreciating the uncovered deeds of lowly garbage workers.Speaking at the programme, founder secretary Niraj Khanal, also the Green Youth Ambassador for Nepal as recognised by World Youth Foundation noted the importance of realising that people from as lowly profession as garbage collection could make significance difference to the global cause of environment conservation.
Anand Mishra and Rijana Shrestha, the coordinators of the program, also expressed their views on the emergent issues of natural degradation and ways to cope up with them. The Program was supported by the WWF, Save the Children, Bank of Kathmandu, among others.
Yatra is a youth-led organisation established in the year 2004 by young volunteers working in the environmental sector with its stated slogan Explore, Appreciate and Act.
